American College Testing - One of two nationally recognized testing agencies used for college admission process. The tests measure educational development in English, mathematics, reading. and science, and are given at specified test centers throughout the year.
ASSET
Assessment of Skills for Successful Entry and Transfer. Monroe County Community College's placement test that assesses a student's current abilities in reading, writing, and math.
Bridges
Comprehensive career planning service on the Internet available in all Monroe County districts.
Career Awareness & Guidance Program
Planned sequence of activities to help students focus on career opportunities.
Career Fair
Mass presentation of career opportunities by local business and industry representatives.
Career Pathway
Integrated academic and occupational learning with school-based and work-based curriculum linked between secondary schools and post secondary institutions.
Career Preparation
Michigan's career preparation system is a system of programs and strategies providing all students with greater choices to prepare for success. It is designed to give all students a jump start to their career by expanding options to explore a variety of career opportunities through their K-12 education. This will be accomplished through a number of strategies including integrated instruction which emphasizes the application of academics to the world beyond the classroom.
Class Extension
Work experience for 4 to 6 weeks in business/industry that is related to a specific class.
COIN
Company that produces educational products for assessment in curriculum and career exploration.
College & Technical School Night
Annual event held at Monroe County Community College consisting of colleges, universities, vocational schools, and military representatives in an informal arena setting.
Co-Op Education
Paid opportunity for students enrolled in Career & Technical Education courses to demonstrate the skills learned in related instruction.
Dual Enrollment
State-funded program that allows high school students to attend college during he junior and/or senior year.
EDP Educational Development Plan
A four or six year individual plan from middle school through high school for setting learning goals and to create/refine a portfolio (record of academic and career progress demonstrating growth, competence, and skills.)
EEDP
Education Employability Development Portfolio
Contains documentation of activities, skills, and information in academic, personal management, and teamwork areas.
FAFSA
Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The Financial aid application document completed by the student and the student's parents, if applicable, that collects household and financial information. The FAFSA is the foundation document for all federal need analysis
computations and database matches performed for a student.
FAMS
Ford Academy of Manufacturing Sciences
Limited enrollment program designed to prepare high school students for careers in the manufacturing field.
Job Shadowing
Non-paid observation at business/industry for career exploration.
MEAP
Michigan Educational Assessment Program
A high school test of student competencies in five areas - math, writing, social studies, science, and reading. (Route of entry for dual enrollment at community college.)
Mentoring
An adult business and industry representative assigned to a student for the purpose of providing career information, feedback on portfolio and/or work specific skills while on a work experience.
MOIS
Michigan Occupational Information System - Computerized career information system.
Payback for Education
Annual career awareness activity for 8th grade students includes hands-on, practical application site visit to local business and industry.
PSAT
Pre-Scholastic Aptitude Testing
Shorter version of SAT given to 11th graders.
SAT Scholastic Aptitude Test
A test of verbal and mathematical abilities given by the College Entrance Examination Board throughout the year at specified test centers and required or recommended by many colleges as part of the admissions process.
Student Volunteering
Non-paid work experience in or outside of school.
STW School-Based Learning
Planned sequence of school activity that integrates workplace requirements into the curricula.
Tech Prep
Students can earn free college credit while in high school that leads to a certificate or associate degree at Monroe County Community College. (In some programs, a bachelor's degree can be pursued, also.)
Work-Based Learning
Planned sequence of progressive activities that connect and transition students to the workplace and/or further training.
