Cover Letter

There are two different purposes for a cover letter. An explanation of the two types of letters is given below:

1.) If you plan to send your resume to an employer, you should also send a cover letter telling why you are interested in a job with that employer. Include some information about yourself that is not covered in your resume. At the bottom of your letter, below where you typed your name, you will sign your name, type your initials, and type the word enclosure. This is shown below:

Sincerely,

Mrs. LaVigne-Benore

ALB
enclosure

See Example 1

2.) If you plan to contact the employer by letter, but do not want to enclose your resume, then prepare a cover letter but do not add that you have anything enclosed. Instead of enclosing a resume, many people choose to take it with them to an interview.

See Example 2

To create your cover letter:

Think of some business or situation where you might want to apply for a job. Be creative, make up an imaginary business! Write your own cover letter.

  • Create a letterhead for yourself; like the one used on your resume or references
  • Write a cover letter for a job that you cold apply for
  • Make yourself sound good
  • Decide whether or not you would be sending your resume with the letter
  • Spell check your work
  • Make sure that the font you choose is the same as the one you used for your resume and references
