Career Occupational Preference System (COPS)

The COPS Interest Inventory is designed to help students identify their interests and focus on skills needed to enter specific careers. The first step in career planning is to find out what kinds of work the student likes to do. The COPS Interest Inventory is designed to help students do just that.

Students will be asked to rate 168 different activities according to how much they like or dislike doing them. Next, students record and interpret their results using the Self Interpretation Profile and Guide. This guide gives step-by-step instructions on how to interpret the results of the inventory.

The activities are divided into 14 categories, and after recording results, a student can refer to careers within the categories in which they scored the highest.

In our class, students will select one career from a category that seems most interesting and applicable to them. Next, they will obtain more information about the selected career. The compiled information will be used to create a HyperStudio project. The COPS Inventory Packet is a paper and pencil activity.
